Daily Deal Sites

Here are some daily deal sites that I subscribe to. (Yes, I just ended a sentence with the word "to."  It's summer and I'm among friends.) Other blogs disclose that they are/are not receiving compensation for the referrals.  Other than with Moolala, I'm not other than I might get some sort of credit when friends sign up.

Plum District - One of today's deals is $5 for a $10 voucher to La Farm Bakery.  I ate there last summer with the kindergarten team and the food was really good.

Moolala -  They have a referral system where you get a % of what the people you refer spend plus a % of what their friend's spend.  It sounds like multi-level marketing without the risk. It doesn't cost anything to join. Today's deal is organic wheat-free dog biscuits.  wow.

And of course, there are Groupon and Living Social.  The discounts are typically around 50%. That's a good deal for something that I would have purchased anyway. I've purchased Amazon vouchers, rock climbing lessons (!), car detailing, pizzas, Old Navy vouchers, and lots more. Living Social gives new members who come by referral 5 Deal Bucks and the referring member gets 5 Deal Bucks, too.

I linked the deal site name to the deal site using my specific referral link. Click on the link if you are interested. The referral URLs were too long and messy to list.

Happy Wednesday and the start of Super Doubles!

Missing NC!

Out here on the tundra, I feel really out of any loop I might be in (today's high temp = 64; tomorrow's = 63). I'm missing Super Doubles at Harris Teeter; I missed out on Sunday's coupons. My dad's newspaper had the Smart Source insert but it contained only 6 coupons. I was amazed but not in a good way.

Here are the url's to a couple of the sites that give me good info and are, in my opinion, helpful.

www.southernsavers.com - what I like about this is that the blogger puts little acorn icons by the items that are at or below her stock-up price. She also has check boxes by the items so you can print a shopping list from the site. (You can add your own items so you don't need two lists.) It's also southern U.S. specific so you don't have to read stuff about Von's or any other stores we don't have. It does have info for non-NC stores though.

www.sundaycouponpreview.com - this site sends me an email when they have new lists of upcoming coupons from P&G, SmartSource, Red Plum, and any others. They also have a insert schedule posted so you can see what's coming, like that there will be no inserts on July 3 because of the holiday. (I've already put my newspaper delivery on hold so I don't get 4 newspapers with no inserts.)

If you haven't done so already and what to get serious about saving, set up a separate email account to use when you are signing up for newsletters, coupons, etc. That way your real email account, the one you give your friends, won't be super-clogged with messages about saving. I'm sure you all know that you can get a free account through gmail or yahoo so I won't tell you that.

BTW, my dad and I are taking a box of products I had in my mini-stockpile to a battered women's shelter today. I brought stuff to see if my dad or his girlfriend wanted any of it. They kept a few things so we are taking the rest to the shelter. I "buy" items just because they are free and, as a result, I have a lot of things that I don't, won't, or can't use. There are tons of place in Wake County that would love your donations. For example, Haven House in Raleigh helps homeless, runaway, and troubled teens. They always have a need for toiletries and paper products.

Clearance at The Teeter

I ran into HT to pick up one thing - yes, only one thing - when I saw the clearance carts (6!) near the checkouts.  I didn't bring my coupon binder in the store with me because I was planning to buy only one thing but I quickly ran out to my car to get it.   To make a long story short, I came out with more than my one item.  I ended up with a pre-coupon, pre-VIC card, pre-clearance total of $78.01.  My out-of-pocket cost was $20.02.

This brings up the big debate in the couponing world - should a saver clip all coupons or only the ones that will be used, storing the rest of the insert (or not) for future use?  If you know me, you know that I clip EVERYTHING and store the Qs in one of two binders.  One binder of items I think I may use and another of items I don't think I'll ever use.  Clipping everything takes more of a time commitment but I think it adds up to more savings.  One way isn't the right way or the better way but it boils down to what works for each person.  I would not have considered purchasing the four boxes of Playtex tampons if I had to pay even the marked down price.  But when each box is only $ .30 (after the $1.50 Q), I tossed the boxes in my cart and I know that someone at Haven House, my new favorite non-profit, will be able to use them.  I don't think they spoil or go bad...

I also purchased two boxes of fabric softener sheets, 64 oz. juice, hand sanitizer wipes (free after coupon!), lots of snacks for the car ride to Minnesota, Tide to Go for when the snacks get messy on the road trip, ketchup, blueberries, and bananas.  The blueberries were a great deal at $1.65/pt.

I'm sad that I will be out of town for most, if not all of super doubles week.  In the days leading up to the sale, it might be a good idea to load ZVR coupons to your VIC card.  (ZVRs are electronic coupons.)  I learned yesterday that the store will deduct both the ZVR and paper coupons for the same item.  ZVRs don't double but it's extra savings any way you look at it.    I thought you could use either a paper coupon or an electronic one.  This is one case where I'm glad I was wrong!

Did you get any good deals today?

What's in this Blog?

To start, this is my first blog so if you have any suggestions, please let me know.
I hope to provide information about:
- good deals that can be found in our local area
- charitable organizations that could use donations from your stockpile
- upcoming sales
- hot coupons
- sites and blogs that I use
- ethical considerations when couponing
- couponing basics for the novice

My biggest pieces of advice are not to base your shopping or couponing success based on what you see on TV.  Take it slow.  An item will be on sale again if you miss a current deal.

My favorite stores are Harris Teeter (HT) and CVS.  I used to shop primarily at Walmart until I realized that I could buy just about everything cheaper at HT or CVS when I had a coupon.

Upcoming Sales:  Harris Teeter Super Doubles 6/22 - 6/28  (Save those $1.00 - $1.98 coupons to use during SD week!)

** I just looked at this posting in preview mode.  Yikes.  I gotta figure out a way to jazz things up.  I may need to learn how to post a picture or at least some clipart.
